GivingTuesday – November 28, 2023
“GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.”
Quote from GivingTuesday website
Many PCMA Capital Chapter members work for non-profit societies, associations or organizations and as part of our job work to amplify GivingTuesday to our members as a way to increase donations. I’m sure those on the supplier side have received more than one request for a donation of a certificate that can be used to help entice donors. The Community Service Committee wanted to share a few ways that you can choose to give back personally not just on GivingTuesday, but throughout the holiday season.
Meetings Industry Fund was created as an avenue for those who are directly involved in the planning, execution, deliver or support of the meetings industry to help or be helped by their peers in a time of need. Donations collected are used to provide financial assistance during times of crisis like a disaster, medical illness or an emergency. Money has been used to help hotel employees in Maui, those affected by layoffs due to COVID-19, and medical emergencies. The system is set up to allow requesters to remain 100% anonymous as applications are reviewed on a blind basis.
Looking to make a child’s holiday a little sweeter? There are numerous local groups that facilitate gift giving to children in the DC area. Two such groups are Bright Beginnings in DC and The Fund for Alexandria’s Child in Alexandria, VA. Bright Beginnings is a non-profit that applies a whole-child, two-generation approach to promote the long-term development and success of children and families experiencing housing instability in Washington, DC. Since 1990 Bright Beginnings has hosted a holiday party with gifts for each child in the program. The Fund for Alexandria’s Child works to enhance the quality of life of children in foster care and children at risk of abuse and neglect by promoting community awareness, involvement and resource development. Each year the Fund for Alexandria’s Children collects information on gift giving for 600 families with the goal to have all 600 sponsored. If you’d like to help support giving towards one of these organizations, click here to learn about donating to Bright Beginnings, and if you’d like to support a family from Alexandria complete the form found here.
Finally, we’d be remiss if we didn’t take this opportunity to remind the Capital Chapter of our year-long chosen charity – Martha’s Table. Martha’s Table operates nationally accredited education programs, provides access to healthy foods along with physical and mental health services. Their facility in South East DC hosts a daily Martha’s Table Market where many Chapter Members have volunteered giving out fresh foods to customers of the group. Find out how you can donate your time or financial funds on this page.
