International Self-Care Day- July 24th (Yes, It’s a Thing!)

I’m one of those people who doesn’t believe in self-help books, manifesting your destiny, psychics, recognizing days such as Siblings Day, Grandparents Day, etc. Now before you stop reading, let me explain. I’m not afraid to ask questions or ask for help when needed. I love my brother and sister and my grandparents, so I don’t need to recognize them one day a year. I pay tribute to them frequently when I’m with them. I don’t acknowledge pet day, although I love my rescue cat, and loved the cat I had previously for 17 years. I do however observe religious holidays and celebrate my faith daily.
When I first heard about International Self-Care Day (it began in 2011), I thought “This is odd that we have to have a day dedicated to self-care” but I realized that so many people, especially in our industry, don’t take time for themselves; the self-less parents who work to provide for their families, the meetings professionals that put in 15+ hours a day on their feet to ensure their attendees are having a meaningful experience and above all a safe one, and that struggle to produce the revenue their organizations require from them to meet budget. Talk about stress!
So why not take 60 minutes for a pedicure? Why not go for that massage at the day spa down the street from where you work? I say, go for that walk at lunchtime and sit in the park and people-watch!
Self-care is crucial to maintaining your overall well-being and improving your mental and physical health. Regular self-care practices can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Activities such as meditation, exercise, and even your hobbies help you maintain mental clarity and do wonders for your emotional stability. Regular exercise and a balanced diet, along with adequate sleep do wonders for your mental health.
The benefits of self-care include:
- Improved Productivity: Taking time for self-care can increase productivity. When you’re well-rested and mentally clear, you can focus better and work more efficiently.
- Better Relationships: When you take care of yourself, you’re in a better position to care for others. Self-care can improve your mood and energy levels, making you more present and engaged in your relationships.
- Self-awareness: Engaging in self-care helps you understand your needs and boundaries better. This awareness can lead to better decision-making and a more balanced life.
- Prevention of Burnout: Regular self-care can prevent burnout by allowing you to recharge and maintain energy levels. It’s especially important for people in high-stress jobs like ours.
I may not believe in a lot of things, but self-care is something I do practice and encourage you to do so also. Each month I schedule a massage and facial and I work out 3-4 days a week. I’ve recently started playing pickleball and must say it is a great stress reliever. Not only am I getting exercise, but I’m enjoying the outdoors and getting time with my friends. We’re not very good at it but we sure do laugh a lot!
