Partner Spotlight: Visit Salt Lake

What makes Capital Chapter Partners the best? Visit Salt Lake speaks to the topics our members care about most!

Who we are:

Visit Salt Lake is a private, nonprofit corporation responsible for the promotion of Salt Lake as a convention and travel destination. In partnership with Salt Lake County, Visit Salt Lake improves the area’s economy by attracting and providing support to conventions, leisure travelers and visitors. The organization has a strong commitment to sustainability and stewardship of the area’s natural environment.

Salt Lake is where mountains meet the metropolitan. The towering Wasatch Mountains embrace the Salt Lake Valley and provide a dramatic backdrop to the vibrant, active urban environment.

We create diverse, inclusive and equitable meeting experiences by:

Founded by religious refugees, Salt Lake has long prided itself on its acceptance of refugees and people from all over the world. The International Rescue Committee, headquartered in Salt Lake, is one of eight national resettlement committees in the US committed to helping refugees thrive here. We are proud of their efforts and welcoming others is part of our ethos. This commitment to welcoming others is one of the reasons we were able to host the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Those games were so successful that the IOC has once again selected Salt Lake to host the Winter Games in 2034. Salt Lake County was the first county in the country to be certified by Welcoming America, a nonpartisan organization that promotes inclusive communities. Salt Lake City was recently certified as a Welcoming City, which recognizes cities that are committed to inclusivity and belonging.

We support NexGen by:

Pattern’s Accelerate 23 meeting at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah – May 2023

We encourage professional and personal development through an initiative which encourages our team members to sign up for at least two development opportunities per year. We are flexible for what those might be including online courses from prestigious institutions, to Master Class memberships, or certification programs

Let’s talk trends!

We survived the COVID and hyper-inflation period, but there has been a casualty no one seems to mention. With continued pressure to hit bottom line budgets, more and more convention planners are ditching sustainability efforts. I have now done this twice, and while this is anecdotal, I pulled the last 10 citywide RFP’s we received for events of 2,000 or more attendees. Only 1 RFP mentioned or requested concessions as it relates to sustainability. Compare this with the results from pulling 10 RFP’s from 2019 in which 6 out of 10 referenced sustainability in some way. It seems our environmental focus has hit a wall and we are in need of some energy as an industry. One thing we are doing in Salt Lake to help is we have designated McKell Nelson as the Sustainable Event Coordinator to help planners set achievable and measurable environmental goals. One of Mickell’s job is to help simplify sustainability and create goals which can be measured and duplicated each year

We are very excited that:

“Condé Nast Traveler announced the results of its annual Readers’ Choice Awards with The Grand America Hotel recognized as the #39 Best Hotel in the World and #1 Best Hotel in the American Southwest and West. The Grand is the only property in Utah to be honored on the world list.”

If you know about the Grand America…then you know. If you don’t, you better ask somebody.
