Q4 Spark: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Not Just a Talking Point!

 

We are excited to announce that our Spark program will be broadcasting LIVE from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on October 29!

While the audience will not be meeting face-to-face, you will get the chance to virtually experience a live event fully produced by Events DC and partner Projection. 1:00-1:15 PM     Welcome Remarks

1:15-2:45 PM     Keynote: CJ Gross  – Unconscious Bias Awareness

Christopher “CJ” Gross, Founder/Chief Executive Officer, Ascension Worldwide

Ascension Worldwide’s Unconscious Bias Awareness Keynote provides participants with the skills and language they need to mitigate their biases and have meaningful conversations with their colleagues, supervisors, and direct reports. Additionally, participants will develop an awareness of how first impressions can lead to biased decision making in the workplace and techniques to interrupt that process. Participants will learn practical tools they can use when making decisions about teams, promotions, hiring, and annual reviews. 

Learning Objectives:

                        • Recognize your own biases and how your background and experiences have shaped them 
                        • Understand the brain science associated with bias 
                        • Master mitigating techniques including six strategies for disrupting your biases 
                        • Apply techniques in the course to your business decisions and interpersonal interactions 
                        • Develop your social and emotional intelligence skills

3:00-4:00 PM:   The Suffragette Movement: An Intimate Conversation on African American Sororities and Their Legacies

 

 

With the National Elections right around the corner, this is a perfect opportunity to reacquaint the Capital Chapter with the history of the Women’s Suffrage movement and their continuing efforts to combat voter suppression and ensure the right to vote in the United States.  

Join us for this special engagement to hear from each of the four distinguished African American sororities: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. This will be a dynamic conversation highlighting not only the earliest origins of their historic contributions to both women of color and women’s rights but their overall contributions to American rights. Each sorority’s legacy and history continue to be truly relevant to today’s conversations.

4:15-5:00 PM:   Fireside Chat: An Uncomfortable Conversation About Being Black in the Meetings Industry

Join us for an intimate fireside chat to hear how Greg O’Dell, President & CEO of Events DC and Deirdre Clemmons, CMP, CAE, Senior Vice President, Events and Strategic Partnerships at Airports Council International-North America, have flourished in the meetings industry, some of the challenges they have faced & continue to face as a black person, and how we can all work together to even the playing field for people of color and other minorities.
